Dark House is a musical subgenre of House music pioneered by Cascadian DJ Mr Darling.
Typified by concept albums centred around dark themes, the subgenre was explained by Mr Darling in an interview on Circa22‘s MainStage event in 2016:
So much of House music is built around the experience of happiness and joy, but these feelings only make up a piece of the human experience. I wanted to create music that explored the opposite side of the coin: the feelings of loneliness, of being afraid, of wanting something more and set those feelings to the beat of pumping House. It started out as an experiment, but it’s one that people really seem to gravitate toward.
