The remnant of France’s territories in the Americas, the Republic of Louisiana split from its mother country during the French Revolution and charted its own, distinct path towards an extreme vision of what it means to be free. To this day, Louisiana is the only nation on earth that does not implement any border control. Anyone can enter Louisiana at any time, and they are equally free to leave, provided wherever they are going will admit them.
Perhaps surprisingly, fewer people visit Louisiana than one might expect, but visitors are known to remark about how Louisiana can be an awkward, even disturbing place to find oneself if one isn’t prepared for a culture in which “Ah, oui, you can do that ici.” has informally become a national motto.
