The Kingdom of Kongo is a central African kingdom bounded by the Atlantic Ocean in the west, the Kotoko Kingdom in the north and west, the Sultanate of Bagirmi in the north, the Empire of Kitara in the north and east, the Ndebele Kingdom in the east, and the Republic of Southwest Africa in the south.
Because of its size, the difficulty of its terrain, the concentration of its people in a few urban centers, and the high density of its jungles and forests, much of the kingdom remains largely unexplored.
